SALEM – One of the most iconic landmarks will be noticeably absent from Derby Wharf this summer as the Friendship of Salem repairs begin with following its departure on July 5 for Gloucester. National Park Service Superintendent Paul DePrey announced the Friendship of Salem would be leaving on Tues. July 5th, encouraging visitors to come and see off the ship with traditional cheers and waving as would have occurred centuries ago. Despite a foggy morning, dozens came out to say bon voyage. “Sending off a departing ship into the harbor is both a fitting tribute to her taking leave and a great way to communicate Salem’s rich maritime heritage,” stated DePrey.
